Sharing is caring!

An article published on the Global Healing Centre website suggests 5 herbs that can help support patients with Alzheimer’s disease.  These herbs are:

  1. Lemon balm – which was sold to 16th century kings as a way of staving off early senility.
  2. Sage – an acetylcholineesterase inhibitor (which is the way Alzheimer’s drug Aricept works).
  3. Ginkgo Biloba – the maidenhair tree and living fossil.  Improves blood flow and oxygen to the brain.  The article cites a 2010 study that showed Ginkgo may help Alzheimer’s patients and another chinese study where Ginkgo had a positive effect on cognitive impairment.
  4. Cat’s Claw (Uncaria tomentosa) – is a woody vine from the tropical jungles of South and Central America.  It get’s it’s name from the claw-shaped thorns.  It has been used as an alternative therapy for inflammation (arthritic conditions).  Cat’s Claw may be able to increase blood supply to the brain by dilating blood vessels.
  5. Ginseng – A Chinese study is quoted where it appeared to reduce cell death in Alzheimer’s disease.
