A role for Vitamin B12 in Hepatitis C

Research suggests that the treatment of hepatitis C may be more effective when vitamin B12 is administered, possible by boosting the body’s ability to fight the virus.

The Italian study showed that patients who received vitamin B12 along with the regular treatment of interferon and ribavirin were more likely to show undetectable levels of the Hep C virus after 24 weeks compared to the control group that did not have vitamin B12 supplements.

Although the experimental group was small (just 94 patients), this study does raise hope for the treatment of this viral disease, especially in those cases where the patients doesn’t seem to respond as well to the traditional drug treatments alone.
