Can your blood pressure medication increase your risk of lip cancer?

Sharing is caring!

Yes, according to research.

Some blood pressure medications increase your sensitivities to sunlight.  The ones mentioned in the study involving non-hispanic whites, were hydrochlorothiazide and nifedipine.

Lip cancer is rare and the benefits of the blood pressure medications may outweigh the risks of getting lip cancer, so if you are taking one of these medications, talk to your doctor about it.  You can also take preventative measures by using high SPF sunscreens – you can get some specifically for your lips.  This is particularly important if you have a lighter skin color and are therefore more likely to burn in the sun.
